That girl next to me in the photo?  That's my fiancĂ©e, the lovely Miss Songbird, and unlike the rest of you, she gets to make art requests...  if she asks nicely

My art background, style, and tools
I have no formal training, save for a few art classes when I was a kid and one more in my freshman year of high school.  Everything you see is just practice, practice, practice.

I can't use a pencil or pen or brush as an art tool; my hands seem to only be able to produce art in the presence of an "undo" button. That said, if I have an "undo" button available, I can usually do some decent-looking stuff.

I generally prefer vector art, because my degree is in computer science and I think in very mathematical terms even when drawing. If you closely examine some of my artwork, you'll find that some of the colors have RGB values that are powers of two, or sums of two powers of two, or equally weird computer-geek-friendly numbers like those.  I also prefer vector art because I can bend and tweak lines over and over and over and over again until I get them right.

I've been drawing vector art since I first laid hands on a copy of CorelDraw 3.0 back around 1993.  My first attempts were terrible, but later works came out better, and in the fall of 2003, I decided to try to see if I could use my vector-art skills to draw anime-style characters.  The first result of that merger was the drawing of Anne that you can see in my gallery, and it was good enough and popular enough that I decided I had something good going, and have been drawing ever since.

I've done some photomorphs, and a few turned out okay, so I may do more.

I don't do paint, art in software like Photoshop.  More accurately: I suck at doing paint.  I did one picture (warning, R-rated) using paint in Corel Photo-Paint after I'd done the outlines in CorelDraw, but the jury's still out on whether the result was better or worse.

My software of choice when I do art is:
  • CorelDraw 11 for most vector work
  • Corel Photo-Paint 11 for finishing touches and touchup
  • IrfanView 3.97 for file-format conversions
  • PngCrush 1.5.10 for extra-small PNG files
  • Firefox 3.0 for posting my artwork online
I'm sorry to say that I'm a bit of a comment whore, in that I'll do just about anything to hear a positive comment about my art.  This is not a good habit, but (as Songbird knows) I can be a bit insecure at times.

Things I like to draw
In general, fantasy-flavored anime-styled art.  But here are some specifics:

Species: Centaurs, nagas, driders, and octo-people. Other 'taurs (cattaurs, etc.) are good too, and occasionally I'm in a satyr mood. "Extras" are also often fun --- people with extra arms, legs, whatever.

Styles: Anime-styled art's a favorite. Good comic-styled art's fun. Disney can be fun if it's not too young. I do photomorphs sometimes.

Content: Spunky, sweet, sexy, pretty, cute, or respectful character portraits. Loving, caring relationships. I prefer the PG-to-R range mostly, but I'll draw outside that if an idea I especially like is outside it. I'm a straight guy, and I'm far better at drawing women than men.

Things I don't like to draw
Species: I don't draw mermaids, because everybody does 'em. I like furries well enough, but I don't draw them. I may draw humans if I feel like it, but it's more frequently as fanart than as anything else.

Styles: Traditional artwork. I'm lousy with paintbrush and pencil, so I don't use either; my stuff's all digital from start to finish, done entirely with a mouse.

Content: Gay/bi/lesbian/herm; I have nothing personal against people who are, but I'm straight, and so my art is too. Vore. Sex without love. Extreme sex acts. Kiddie porn. Inanimate TFs. Liquids spraying or covering people. Bestiality. Extreme violence. Cruelty and pain. Swear words.

Um, well, so there ya have it.
